Reminder! Our Make Like a Boss Event with Jenny and Jen of Stitch & Story is one week away!

Our July Make Like a Boss event is just one week away! Do you have your ticket? Make Like a Boss is a networking series for creative small businesses that we host at our West Hampstead shop. Each super fun, free event features a Q&A with a small business owner (or in this case, owners) followed by time to hang out and chat, learn, share, moan and come away with some new contacts and ideas for your business. Drinks and nibbles are provided!

Make Like a Boss with Jen and Jenny of Stitch & Story

Next week we’ll be chatting to Jenny Lam and Jen Hoang of Stitch & Story. Stitch & Story is a modern knitting brand founded by two friends whose passion for knitting gave them the inspiration to fill a gap they found in the market. They aim to make knitting simple and stress-free by offering all-in-one DIY kits with knitting patterns to reflect current fashion trends and lifestyle products.

Sign up now for the Great London Yarn Crawl 2017!

The Great London Yarn Crawl is back! The fifth annual tour of London’s best yarn and haberdashery shops will take place on Saturday, 9th September, 2017 and we are thrilled that our West Hampstead shop will be included. Organised by Yarn in the City, this wonderful event is a chance to meet some other knitters/hookers/fibre-loving folk, take in some of the sights of London, and generally hang out with yarn!

The Great London yarn crawl

This year’s Great London Yarn Crawl is a day-long tour of yarn and haberdashery shops around the city followed by an exclusive after-party – this year featuring a Mini Yarn Market – for even more yarn-y goodness! Profits from The Great London Yarn Crawl event will be donated to Refuge. To date the Great London Yarn Crawl has raised over £3,800 for this fantastic charity.  As with previous years they will also be collecting knit accessories such as hats and mittens, cowls, scarves and shawls for women and children to be distributed by Knit for Peace.

Reminder! June Make Like a Boss with Tilly Walnes is tonight!

A quick reminder that the June event in our Make Like a Boss networking series for creative small businesses is tonight at 7pm at our West Hampstead Shop! This month we’re excited to chat with Tilly Walnes from Tilly and the Buttons about her journey from learning to sew to international sewing pattern brand in just a few years. Our Q&A will be followed by time to hang out and chat, learn, share, moan and come away with some new contacts and ideas for your business. Drinks and snacks will be provided! She is the author of the Sunday Times bestseller Love at First Stitch, was a contestant in BBC2’s The Great British Sewing Bee and was named ‘Favourite Sewing Personality’ in the British Sewing Awards the last two years in a row. We’ll be talking to Tilly about turning her sewing blog into a full-time job, how to expand from a one-woman business into a team, writing a book (she has another one on the way!) and more.

Reminder! World Wide Knit in Public Day is next Saturday

We are so excited that World Wide Knit in Public Day (WWKIPDAY) is next Saturday, 10 June! And we are teaming up with Yarn in the City (the awesome ladies who bring you the Great London Yarn Crawl, among other fabulous events) to host a  event on West Hampstead Square from 11am – 2pm.

World Wide Knit in Public Day

WWKIPDAY is unique in that it’s the largest knitter run event in the world. Each local event is put together by a volunteer or a group of volunteers. The event has been running every year on the second Saturday in June since 2005. There were 1015 events last year in 57 countries. Wow!

So grab your knitting project (need ideas? We’ve got some here!) and join us on 10 June. We can’t wait to take over West Hampstead Square with you! There will be door prizes, free samples of Soak and cold drinks on hand!

Make Like a Boss is back this Wednesday! Hosted at The Village Haberdashery in West Hampstead, Make Like a Boss is our monthly networking evening for creative small businesses. Each event features a Q&A with a small business owner followed by time to hang out and chat, learn, share, moan and come away with some new contacts and ideas for your business. This month we’ll be chatting to Suzie Dicker from À L’aise! À L’aise is a luxury stationery and leather goods brand that launched in 2015 and is stocked in stores such as Anthropologie, Fenwicks and The Design Museum. Suzie also does calligraphy for brands such as Aspinal of London, Clinique and House of Fraser. We’ll be talking to Suzie about launching and building her company and how her product range has grown and evolved plus we’ll get her advice for getting your products manufactured and how to work with working with big brand clients. We have so many exciting classes lined up in June with something to suit every level, interest, and schedule! The idea of sewing jeans can be intimidating for even the most experienced dressmakers, but in this class our talented teacher will guide you through every step, from trouser-fitting to inserting a zip-fly to top-stitching to installing jeans hardware. The Ginger Jeans pattern from Closet Case Files is a classic 5-pocket jeans sewing pattern with a modern and flattering cut designed for stretch denim. Cross stitch is portable, relaxing and seriously addictive! This one-evening class will cover the cross stitch basics from tools to techniques while you stitch a modern cross stitch design to take home! You’ll learn how to work with embroidery floss and the various types of cross stitch fabric, how to get started by anchoring your thread and reading a stitch chart, how to follow a pattern including basic stitches, working rows and changing colours and how to finish your work to display it at home. Make a cushion with great graphics and gentle curves! In this workshop, Jenny Haynes of Papper, Sax, Sten will cover all the elements of piecing a Kels O’Sullivan block and sewing a cushion. The class is a fun and colourful introduction to hand embroidery that is designed for beginners or those who want a refresher. You will start by learning the tools of the craft, how to use a hoop and how to transfer a pattern. Next, we’ll explore a selection of stitches – running stitch, back stitch, stem stitch, French knots and more – by creating a sweet modern sampler designed by Carina. Dressmaking 101 with Charlotte Newland

Would you love to make clothes but find patterns impossible to understand? This one-day class will demystify the dressmaking process, using the Zinnia pattern to make a beautiful skirt in the fabric of your choice. You will learn standard sewing terms and techniques that you can apply to other patterns and gain the confidence to sew your own clothes. Tuesday, 27 June, 6:30pm – 9pm (£60)

Taught by illustrator Emma Block, this contemporary brush lettering workshop will focus on developing skills and learning techniques allowing you to grow in confidence and start to develop your own brush lettering style. We’ll start with exercises to practice making shapes, creating lines of different thicknesses and using different brushstrokes. You’ll then practice writing the alphabet, words and phrases with plenty of help and guidance on hand. Attention, Makers! Join us for Make Like a Boss on 24 May featuring a Q&A with Suzie Dicker from À L’aise

Our Make Like a Boss networking series for creative small businesses kicked off last Wednesday with a great first event featuring Rachel and Kate from The Fold Line and it was such a success! Minor technical difficulties aside, everyone had a great time and we’re really looking forward to seeing everyone again in May. Reminder: Make Like a Boss with The Fold Line next Wednesday, 26 April!

Super important reminder time: We are kicking off our new monthly networking series for creative small businesses called Make Like a Boss on Wednesday, 26 April at our West Hampstead shop!

Make Like a Boss with The Fold Line

Each free event features a Q&A with a small business owner followed by time to hang out and chat, learn, share, moan and come away with some new contacts and ideas for your business. Drinks and snacks will be provided!

Our first event on 26 April will feature Rachel and Kate from The Fold Line! The Fold Line is an online hub for the sewing community to socialise, review dressmaking patterns and keep up-to-date with the latest news and sewing pattern releases. Since launching in late 2015, the site has grown like crazy and the team have won a Mollie Makes Handmade Award and a British Craft Award for their contribution to the industry. We’ll be talking to Rachel and Kate about the challenges of launching a website, the thrill of seeing those user numbers grow and making the leap to running the website full time.
