Wonderland vignettes in our West Hampstead Shop!

Today Kym is taking over the blog to share all of the gorgeous samples we have in the shop using fabric from the Wonderland fabric collection from Rifle Paper Co. for Cotton and Steel! We got some great snaps of these garments and quilts, but in the shop they really tell the Alice in Wonderland story so we hope you’ll come in to see them all in person. It’s so much fun in here!

When I heard that we were about to receive the stunning Wonderland collection from Rifle Paper Co. for Cotton and Steel I was so excited and my head started buzzing with ideas! I have always loved the Alice in Wonderland story and it was a dream come true to have the opportunity to create a shop full of themed displays.

Our new shop is the perfect setting for our cute vignettes and I had great fun creating a little scenes in each area. Annie and I popped out onto one of the pretty roof gardens behind our shop for the photoshoot. We hope you like our new backdrops.

The Tea Party

Is there a more perfect dress for afternoon tea than the Colette Rue Dress in a beautiful Garden Party print fabric?

I just love the v shaped bodice (you can just about see it on the below image) and pleated skirt. Such an elegant shape! This dress is also fully lined in Kona Cotton Solids Indigo.

Just like in our blue, orange and ivory vignette we re-covered this Ikea Ekenäset Armchair in a new fabric. This time the Wonderland Canvas in Light Blue Metallic was the obvious option as it is so gorgeous and I just love how it has turned out! A big thanks to @electricsmoke for helping me out with the staple gun when putting it together!

Last time we didn’t share the back of the chair with you but here it is! It has two YKK 22inch Standard zips mimicking the original Ikea upholstery underneath.

I had a lovely couple of afternoons at local ceramic painting shop Art for Fun because you simply can’t have a tea party without a teapot! I painted this one in a Cheshire Cat theme with matching tea cup. The little Doormouse asleep inside is knitted up in Cascade 220 in Walnut Heather and this pattern from Ravelry.

Mad Tea Party

I spotted this tutorial online to make a Mad Hatter’s Hat and @chefgreg took up the challenge. Isn’t it fab! It is amazing what you can create with cardboard, paper and the all important Mod Podge!

Mad Hatter Hat

Alice and the White Rabbit

The first window you come to in the shop is the home of the White Rabbit! He is looking very smart in the Oliver + S Art Museum Vest in Magic Forest in Neutral and Cotton + Steel Basics – Netorious in Black Cat. I love how well these fabrics go together. The fastenings are Black Kam Snaps!

His bow tie is in Kona Cotton Solids Black and made using this tutorial. I created his fluffy tail using a ball of Rico Essentials Soft Merino Aran in Natural and the really fun Multipom pom pom maker! The shorts are Oliver + S Sketchbook Shorts in Robert Kaufman‘s Manchester in Charcoal and the shirt is our usual go-to white button down Oliver + S Sketchbook Shirt.

In this vignette we also have Alice looking very pretty in her Megan Neilsen Darling Ranges Dress stitched up in Caterpillar Dots in Cobalt Metallic.

I had a great time making the self covered buttons with Cotton + Steel BasicsNetorious in Goldilocks and Silver. They are so easy to make!

Quilt Garden

On our quilt swings in the shop we have two fabulous quilts! The first has been stitched by Caroline in a fabulous Backgammon design. The pattern is the Melody Miller Playful Quilt and can be downloaded from the Cotton + Steel website.

It is so cool how she has used the selvedge in the piecing!

And of course not forgetting her trademark paw print signature.

Our second beautiful quilt was stitched by our teacher and friend Jenny Haynes. She has taken inspiration from a Double Drunkard’s Path block quilt block to create this striking design which is called ‘Five Impossible Things’.

The background print is Magic Forest in Midnight Metallic and I just love how the gold shines!

Jenny has created a no binding effect on the quilt edges which gives it a really clean modern finish.

The back of quilt is a great neutral contrast to the front and really shows off her exquisite quilting!

Painting the Roses

Our Queen of Hearts is wearing the simply stunning By Hand London Flora Dress in the Painted Roses in Orange Rayon. (This print also comes in a stylish black colourway). The rayon has such a lovely feel to it and do not fear, it is not as slippery to work with as you might think! I just used some finer needles to compliment when stitching, Schmetz Universal Needles – Size 60/8 worked great.

The full circle skirt on this pattern creates such a lovely silhouette and she looks so chic in our window!

Our little girl is wearing the super cute Merchant and Mills The Skipper Dress. How sweet is she! Fabric is Follow Suit in Orange Metallic.

I couldn’t resist making some paper roses from our paper flower making supplies. The Queen of hearts is not going to be happy with me… we had better get painting those roses red!

I hope you enjoyed reading all about our Wonderland displays. We would love to see what you have all made with the collection. Tag your makes with #thevillagehaberdashery. Happy Sewing!

Wonderland by Rifle Paper Co.

We could not be more delighted by the arrival of Wonderland by Rifle Paper Co. for Cotton and Steel! A few years ago, Anna Rifle Bond was asked by Puffin Books to illustrate the 150th anniversary edition of the classic novel Alice in Wonderland.

Wonderland by Cotton and Steel

The Wonderland collection brings her nearly 80 hand paintings to Cotton and Steel fabrics, including quilting cottons, lawns, cotton/linen canvases and rayons.

Painted Roses in Orange Rayon from Wonderland by Rifle Paper Co.

In this beautiful collection, Alice falls into the rabbit hole to a world of tea parties and enchanted forests, meeting a well-known cast of characters along the way. Find Wonderland in the shop here.

SS Bluebird by Cotton and Steel

The follow up to last year’s Bluebird line, SS Bluebird is a collaborative collection that puts a nautical spin and fun red accents into the mix of blue-hued designs. We just adore the prints we’re stocking – the letters, the apples, the anchor-heart print. They are all so much fun! Find SS Bluebird in the shop here.

Black and White 2017 by Cotton and Steel

This year’s collaborative Black and White collection features neon pink accents and some of our favourite designs – retro roller skates, pink-cheeked cats and curious bears! Find Black and White 2017 in the shop here.

Sleep Tight by Sarah Watts

Sleep Tight is a gender-neutral collection inspired by what babies might dream about, and it features lots of cute animals and pops of fun colours. We’re especially fond of this large scale panel, which can be used for whole cloth quilts (the one below is from the Sleep Tight booth at fall Quilt Market) and soft toys! Find Sleep Tight in the shop here.

Be part of our upcoming Wonderland display!

Calling all Knitters and Crocheters!

To celebrate the arrival of the much anticipated Wonderland collection by Rifle Paper Company for Cotton and Steel (coming so soon!) we are planning a big Alice in Wonderland themed display for our West Hampstead shop and we need your help!
Wonderland by Rifle Paper Co.

We would love you to get your knitting needles and crochet hooks out and stitch us some tea party treats! We are looking for miniature cakes, biscuits, cookies, and tea cups, juice bottles…. you get the idea!

Crochet Cake Sachets Inseparable Cake

The only criteria is that they should be no bigger than 4 inches by 4 inches. Pick any colours you like – this is a great project for using up up your bits of left over yarn!

There are some great free patterns out there and you can find links to some good ones below. Or, of course, you can make up your own! Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • For crocheters check out the totally adorable Crochet Cake Sachets by Normalynn Hood. The images that follow are from this collection!
  • For knitters we love Jean Greenhouse’s Tea Party Treats!

Crochet Cake Sachets Mini Cakes

Please drop off your finished goodies at our shop in West Hampstead or pop them in the post to us by 31 March (our new postal address is The Village Haberdashery, Unit 6, Hardy Building, Heritage Lane, NW6 2BR). We aim to reveal our displays at the beginning of April so we would love to receive your work before then if possible. But don’t panic – we can still add items to it if you don’t finish in time!

Afterwards we will donate them all to The Children’s Society shop on West End Lane.

Have fun! And if you have any questions, contact us.

A close up on our blue, orange and ivory vignette!

This vignette is my absolute favourite and it’s right in the front of our West Hampstead shop when you walk in, with a gorgeous antique mirror behind it looking like it belongs in everybody’s dream home! Again, it was one of those ideas that brewed for months while we waited to figure out when on earth we were going to get to move in. I knew we needed an upholstered chair in the shop, with a chunky knitted throw on top, and these pieces came together better than I could have dreamed!

Blue, red and white vignette at The Village Haberdashery

This chair is just so gorgeous! I love it so much. The plan is to upholster it in new fabric about every six weeks but it’s going to be so hard to let it go! It is an Ikea Ekenäset Armchair and the fabric is Daisy Fields in Blue from Trinket Canvas by Melody Miller for Cotton and Steel. The only thing that makes me feel better is that it is destined to be covered in Wonderland Canvas by Rifle Paper Co. next!

Chair upholstered in Trinket Canvas by Melody Miller

This chunky throw is the Montauk Blanket by Loopy Mango knitted up in Big Loop Merino in Ivory. It’s so great to have it on display because it really demonstrates what a show stopper this yarn is. We have kits for this blanket and they knit up in just a few hours!

Loopy Mango Big Loop Montauk Blanket

Our lady is wearing a Fancy Tiger Crafts Fen Dress in Checkers Gingham in 1″ Gingham in Navy from Cotton and Steel. It was super windy the day we had to take these pictures so we didn’t get the best shots, but this dress is so cute, so soft, and just going to be a dream to wear one day (by me, I hope!)

Fancy Tiger Crafts Fen in Checkers by Cotton and Steel

Finally we added a lampshade! These are a quick and fun make using one of our kits and this one is made up in Check It in Tangerine (sold out, sorry!) from Euclid by Carolyn Friedlander for Robert Kaufman.

Apart from the blanket on loan from Loopy Mango, the samples were all made by Kym!

There are three surveys and you can earn 25 Stash Points for each one you fill out before Sunday, 19 March!

Cozy is wintry but not Christmasy, and in an unexpected palette in shades of violet, tangerine and mint.

A close up on our neon vignette!

We have such a fun neon vignette in our West Hampstead shop, and we’re finally sharing it with you! As you know, we love neon so much around here we’ve given you a special place on our site to find all the neon!

Neon Vignette

So let’s have a look at these fun samples, shall we? First up, we have this awesome Super Cropped Cardigan on loan from Loopy Mango knit up in Merino No. 5 in Spicy Hot Pink. We have this pattern as a digital download that we can share with you when you purchase yarn for the project! Everyone in the shop has tried it on and it’s so fun. The denim skirt is a Grainline Moss Skirt in Selvedge Denim by Robert Kaufman. The skirt was sewn by Zoe Edwards.

Our little girl is wearing an Oliver + S Roller Skate Tunic in XOXO in Lightening from the Cotton and Steel Basics collection sewn by Kym. The ribbon is a cotton twill ribbon in Ivory. The little shorts are Green Bee Anya shorts in chambray sewn by Charlotte that have previously been seen in this window and this window.

Finally, we have these fabulous neon macrame plant hangers! Caroline, Kym and I made these with Susana Cunha for this display and I just adore them. It’s hard to get a good photo where they are in front of the window, but they look amazing! Exactly what I imagined when I dreamt up this vignette months ago.

If you want to learn macrame, Susana has a tutorial for these plant hangers on The Daily Stitch here and a class coming up on 25 March that you can sign up for here!
